Energi Akademiet - A Model for Community-Led Sustainable Energy Transitions

This case study focuses on Energi Akademiet, an NGO on the Danish island of Samsø that is a global pioneer in community-led renewable energy initiatives. The island achieved 100% renewable energy self-sufficiency and a negative CO2 footprint by 2007 through a holistic approach emphasising citizen empowerment and 90% local ownership of wind turbines. The Akademi now acts as a vital knowledge hub, sharing its scalable model of "next practice" and capacity building with international communities and leaders.
